The Cheapest Times to Fly From Australia to Bali, Japan & Europe in 2026

By Mubboo TeamMarch 19, 202611 min read

The difference between booking flights at the right time and the wrong time? Easily $400–800 per person on popular routes from Australia. We're not talking about some theoretical saving — we pulled actual pricing data from Momondo and Skyscanner for March 2026, looked at seasonal patterns from the last two years, and mapped out exactly when each route is cheapest.

The short version: avoid school holidays, fly midweek, book 6–12 weeks ahead. But the details matter — Bali's cheap season is completely different from Japan's, and Europe has pricing quirks that catch a lot of people out.

Bali — Australia's Backyard, but Timing Still Matters

Tegalalang rice terraces get packed by 10am. If you're heading there, get in before 8 or try Jatiluwih instead — bigger, quieter, and no entry fee scam.

There are now 227 weekly flights from 11 Australian cities to Bali (as of March 2026, per Australian Frequent Flyer data). That's more than pre-COVID levels. Competition keeps prices relatively sane year-round, but the swing between cheap and expensive months is still significant.

Cheapest months: February, October, November. You're looking at $300–450 return from most east coast cities. Yes, it's technically wet season, but "wet season" in Bali mostly means a short afternoon downpour — the rest of the day is fine. We went in October 2024 and had one rainy arvo out of eight days.

Most expensive: June–August and December–January. Dry season plus school holidays. Return fares climb to$600–900+. If you absolutely must go during school holidays, book at least 3 months ahead — last-minute July fares to Bali are painful.

SeasonMonthsReturn Fare RangeWhy
CheapestFeb, Oct, Nov$300–450Wet season / shoulder — fewer tourists, quick afternoon rain only
Mid-rangeMar–May, Sep$450–600Shoulder season — good weather-to-price balance
ExpensiveJun–Aug, Dec–Jan$600–900+School holidays + dry season = peak demand

Perth fares are consistently $100–150 cheaper than east coast cities for Bali. If you're flexible on departure city and can connect via Perth, it's worth checking.

Bali Specifics Worth Knowing

  • Perth is consistently the cheapest departure city — 3.5 hours direct, returns from $250 in shoulder season (Momondo data, March 2026)
  • • Tuesday departures average $60–100 cheaper than Saturday departures on the same route
  • • Jetstar runs flash sales roughly monthly — their Jetsetter Club emails are genuinely worth signing up for
  • • Jetstar no longer flies 787s with Business Class to Bali — it's all A321neo LR now, economy only
  • • Since March 2026, Jetstar also flies direct from Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, Melbourne Avalon and Newcastle

Japan — The #1 Destination, With a Pricing Trap

Mount Fuji with cherry blossoms

Cherry blossom season (late March–mid April) is when everyone wants to go — and when fares are at their worst. If you can shift to early May, you'll save $300–500 per person and still catch late blooms in northern Honshu.

Japan is the #1 international destination for Australians in 2026, with 29 daily flights across 28 airlines (Momondo, March 2026). The weak yen makes everything in Japan ridiculously good value on the ground — a quality ramen bowl for $7, a night in a decent hotel for $80. The airfare is the biggest cost by far.

The pricing trap: cherry blossom season (late March–April) is the most expensive time to fly. We checked Momondo's March 2026 data and found return fares of $1,200–1,800 from Sydney during peak sakura weeks. Shift your trip to May or late August and you're looking at $650–900 return — same country, same amazing food, $500 less in your pocket.

Honestly, we reckon May is the best time to visit Japan full stop. The weather is perfect (20–25°C), crowds are manageable, and you might even catch late cherry blossoms in Hokkaido. Plus the fares are near their annual floor.

SeasonMonthsReturn Fare RangeWhy
CheapestMay, Jun, late Aug$650–900Between sakura and summer peak — weather is great
Mid-rangeJan–Feb, Oct–Nov$900–1,100Winter / autumn colours — popular but manageable pricing
ExpensiveMar–Apr (sakura), Jul, Dec$1,200–1,800+Cherry blossom + school holidays = peak everything

Tip: if you want sakura without the sakura price tag, fly in early May and head to Hokkaido — cherry blossoms arrive about 4 weeks later there than in Tokyo.

Japan Specifics Worth Knowing

  • Cairns is often the cheapest departure point thanks to Jetstar direct services to Tokyo
  • • Fly into Haneda (HND) not Narita (NRT) — it's 20 minutes from central Tokyo vs 90 minutes for Narita. Same fares.
  • • ANA and JAL typically release sale fares in January for shoulder season — set price alerts around New Year
  • No visa required for Australians — up to 90 days visa-free entry
  • Average delay rate: 17% of AU→Japan flights see some delay, averaging 131 minutes. Wednesday flights have the fewest delays. (Momondo historical data)

Europe — Long Haul, Big Savings If You Time It Right

Paris skyline with Eiffel Tower in soft afternoon light

A return flight to Europe in February can be $800 cheaper than the same flight in July. Not a typo. European winter is cold but cheap — and cities like Paris, London and Rome are heaps more pleasant without the summer tourist crush.

Europe is the long-haul dream trip, and the airfare is the make-or-break cost. The good news: competition on routes through Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian hubs (Singapore, Dubai, Doha, Kuala Lumpur) keeps one-stop fares competitive. The bad news: the spread between cheap season and peak season is enormous.

Cheapest months: February, March, November. We're talking $1,000–1,400 return to London or Paris from Sydney/Melbourne. Yes, it's European winter. It's cold. But the cities aren't rammed with tour groups, museums have no queues, and restaurants actually have tables available. If you're a city-trip person (not a beach-in-the-Med person), this is the sweet spot.

Most expensive: June–August. European summer = peak everything. Return fares hit $1,800–2,800. If you must go in summer, the shoulder months of May and September are noticeably cheaper ($1,400–1,800) and the weather in southern Europe is still warm.

SeasonMonthsReturn Fare RangeWhy
CheapestFeb, Mar, Nov$1,000–1,400European winter — cold but uncrowded, great for city trips
Mid-rangeApr–May, Sep–Oct$1,400–1,800Shoulder season — best weather-to-price ratio overall
ExpensiveJun–Aug, Dec$1,800–2,800+European summer + Christmas = maximum demand from every country

If you're flexible on destination within Europe, check Skyscanner's "Everywhere" search from your city — it shows the cheapest European city to fly to on any given date. We've found fares to Budapest and Lisbon that were $300 cheaper than London for the same travel period.

Europe Booking Strategies

  • Qatar Airways, Emirates, Etihad consistently offer the best value one-stop fares from AU to Europe
  • • Singapore Airlines' "multi-city" option lets you add a Singapore stopover at no extra airfare cost — good for breaking up the trip
  • Open-jaw is your friend: fly into London, out of Rome (or wherever). Same price as a return in most cases, and you see more
  • • Sunday bookings can be up to 20% cheaper than midweek bookings on long-haul routes (BookMyTrip.com.au data)
  • • Set up Google Flights alerts for your route — prices can drop $300+ overnight when airlines release seat sales

Frequently Asked Questions

How far ahead should I book international flights?

6–12 weeks is the sweet spot for most routes. Book too early (6+ months) and airlines haven't released competitive fares yet. Too late (under 3 weeks) and you're paying last-minute premium. For peak periods like Christmas and school holidays, bump that to 3–4 months ahead.

Is it really cheaper to fly on a Tuesday?

For short-haul (Bali, NZ, SE Asia) — yes, consistently. Momondo data shows Tuesday departures from Australia to Bali average $60–100 less than Saturday. For long-haul, the day of booking matters more than the day of flying — Sunday bookings tend to show lower prices.

Should I use a VPN to get cheaper flights?

We've tested this a few times and honestly, the savings are inconsistent and small. Sometimes you see $10–20 difference, sometimes nothing. Our take: your time is better spent setting up Google Flights or Skyscanner price alerts and waiting for a genuine fare drop than fiddling with VPNs. The big savings come from timing and flexibility, not browser tricks.

Do I need a visa for Bali / Japan / Europe?

Bali (Indonesia): Visa on arrival, 30 days, about $50. Japan: No visa needed — 90 days visa-free for Australians. Schengen Area (most of Europe): No visa needed for stays under 90 days in a 180-day period. UK: No visa for visits under 6 months. Always check smartraveller.gov.au before you go — rules do change.

One last thing we always tell mates who ask: set up alerts and forget about it. Google Flights, Skyscanner, whatever — just punch in your route, set the alert, and let it email you when prices drop. We booked Perth to Tokyo return for $680 last year because a Skyscanner alert pinged us on a Thursday arvo. Would've been $1,100 the week before. That's the difference timing makes.
